About me
Welcome to Richard Travels Cheap!
I traveled quite a bit for less money and I started this website to share how I do it.
Traveling especially by air is generally expensive. People can debate on whether to spend money on materials or experiences. I choose experiences and traveling cheap has let me experience many experiences.
How I travel
My budget for total airfare cost in a domestic trip is usually about $60-200.
I live near Los Angeles in sunny California. Most flights I book is at my least favorite airport, LAX. Next is Ontario International Airport however the distance to get from home to the Inland Empire is quite long. I want to use Long Beach Airport more since it’s the least crowded and most convenient airport but there are only so many flights out of that airport. I cannot find deals with John Wayne Airport in Orange County and always include that airport in my search.
I think trying out public transportation in another city is an experience on its own. This way I get to discover some places I wouldn’t find out if I’m driving and more importantly staying cheap. If public transportation isn’t available, Uber would be my next choice.
In my experience, cheap traveling often comes with inconveniences like sitting in a seat with minimal legroom or taking a crazy Greyhound bus. I like to think cheap traveling can be adventurous like taking flights in the middle of the night, sleeping at airports, and taking bus routes that steer far away a touristy area.
Pictures on this site
Most of my monochrome pictures shown in my travels is taken with a Nikon F100. For me it’s much more exciting to find out how my photos will look after developing and scanning than what a DSLR can show me instantly on screen. I also carry a Nikon DSLR with me sometimes on my travels which I use interchangeable Nikon lenses on both film and digital bodies.
